The Man Who Saw India From Space

The infinite space has bewildered humans from long gone centuries. Everyone has at one point of time in their whole life of going to space for once or just place your feet on the surface of the moon. For many, this may just a dream or a figment of their imagination. But some people work hard and do every bit to put their dream on the mechanism of reality. Rakesh Sharma is a name not unknown to any citizen of India because he is the first Indian citizen to travel into space.
 
Rakesh Sharma was Born on 13 January 1949 in Punjab. Having an acute interest in the army, he joined Air Force as a cadet in 1966 at the age of 18. Proving his mettle and through his extreme hard work and dedication, he was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in 1970 to become a pilot. In 1984 he became the first Indian citizen to enter into space when he flew aboard the Soviet rocket Soyuz T-11. Rakesh Sharma spent 7 days 21 hours and 40 minutes aboard while conducting various experimental sessions. Upon his arrival, he was conferred with the honour of “Hero of the Soviet Union”. He was also conferred with “Ashok Chakra” by the Indian government.

Tarannah-e-hind or saare jahan se achcha hindustan humara was penned by the talented poet Muhammed Iqbal in 1904. The poem which guarantees goosebumps is warmly accepted by everyone. The lyrics of the song were earlier just mere words but these words were externalised by the words of Rakesh Sharma. When the former prime minister of India late. Indira Gandhi asked Sharma through an official television news conference that how does India look from space, Rakesh Sharma proudly answered “ Saare jahan se achchha hindustan humara”. He mainly worked in the field of biomedicine and remote sensing.


Sharma’s sheer hard work and dedication made him what he is today. The reputation respect and appreciation which he garnered was a result of his determination and focus. Rakesh Sharma truly made every Indian proud by achieving such feat. Due to this his name is externalised and will be remembered by every generation with loads of respect. Hats off sir.
